Some Popular Stone Types:
Sandstone - Soft and porous material for indoor use. Any finish matt, glossy or satin can be used. Sandstone tiles should be resealed on an annual basis to resist staining.
Limestone - The quality of this stone varies. Soft varieties can be used in areas of low traffic. Harder stones may be used in areas of high traffic. All of it should be resealed regularly.
Slate - Hard varieties of slate are used in outdoor flooring and in areas of medium traffic. Some slates are frost-proof depending on their origin.
Marble - Usually this is a hard stone so it can be used in hallways and other areas of high traffic. It is also suitable for bathroom floors. Because it is porous and does not react well with acidic foods (tomatoes, etc.), it is not the best for kitchen counters, but because it so beautiful, that is just how lots of people want to use it. Just remember to reseal it often!
Granite - The hardest stone available. Granite can be used in high traffic zones and in kitchens. Polished granite exudes a feeling of opulence and grandeur in a space.
Terra Cotta - is a man-made stone that has properties similar to natural stone. The process of its creation involves compacting clay and then firing it in a kiln. The tiles have color variations that may be used to add to the aesthetic appeal of the floor. The surface can be smooth or rough. Patterns and textures can also be created on the surface of the tiles.
Terrazzo - another man-made stone that is frequently used in floors in high and medium traffic zones.
Onyx – Onyx is a form of quartz and produces some of the most elegant and colorful flooring.
Note: All natural stones should be sealed against staining, especially marble, limestone and sandstone.
Finishes:
Polished – Brings out the beauty of the stone floors by reflecting the natural crystals for a high shine. Limestone, marble, onyx, travertine and granite floors are typically polished.
Honed – This is the step prior to polishing, it leaves the stone with a matte appearance. It will typically show fewer scratches and is easy to maintain. Slate, marble and limestone are well suited for this style of finish.
Acid-Washed – Etched with small marks and pits, acid-washed floors bring out a more rustic look and are often seen on limestone, marble and granite floors.
Flamed-Stone - Flooring with flamed finishes are heated to an extremely high temperature then cooled quickly. This produces a rough texture from the chipped and popped stone surface. This is commonly used to make granite floors slip resistant.
Split-Faced – Primarily seen in slate flooring, this finish produces an uneven coarse finished stone. It can be done either by hand or mechanically produced.
Tumbled- This finish is created by use of a machine that leaves a smooth or a slightly pitted surface with rounded edges and corners.
Brushed – Brushed stone floors have a naturally worn appearance with a smooth matte finish and a slightly dimpled texture.
Tumbled Stone- Soft round edges mostly in smaller format tiles. Example 4x4, 6x6 inch.
